A real American hero, Retired Navy Cmdr. John Wells, who is also executive director of the Military Veterans Advocacy based in Louisiana, was chosen by the New Orleans Saints to receive its Peoples Health Champion Award for highlighting the “health and well-being of our military, veterans and their families.” It’s an honor to be recognized for the good work one is doing in their community to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors, but it matters “who” is bestowing the honor.

Which is exactly what Commander Wells told the Saints when he refused to accept their award.

“Although I am touched and honored to be selected for such an award, the ongoing controversy with NFL players’ disrespect for the national flag forces me to decline to participate in the presentation " he said. “I am unable, in good conscience, to enter an NFL stadium while this discourtesy prevails. Since this award is tainted with the dishonorable actions of the NFL and its players, I cannot accept it.”

Because of their unbelief, the Lamanites are cursed, receive a skin of blackness, and become a scourge unto the Nephites chapter summary. Paul Harvey’s “If I Were the Devil Transcript” from 1965

In 1965, Paul Harvey broadcasted “If I Were The Devil.”  I am posting the transcript of this on Fresh Manna Today.  It is really amazing to realize over 47 years ago how accurately he “prophesied” the future spiritual condition of the United States.  Many of his statements were considered ridiculously outlandish at that time in history.  Yet, we find ourselves today…

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of it’s real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those, and who have, and give to those wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. And what do you bet? I could get whole states to promote gambling as thee way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work, in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing on what he’s doing. In celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ our thoughts turn to that sacred occasion when He was born "The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). He promised: "He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12). Truly, Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer who was "wounded for our transgressions … and with his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5).

Our prayer this Christmas season is that the light and testimony of the Savior's divine mission will come into our hearts and be reflected in our lives and in our homes.

May each of us be blessed, not only at this Christmas season, but also throughout the coming year. May our faith in Jesus Christ increase as we follow His example in all we do and say.

President Russell M. Nelson was sustained and set apart as the 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, January 14, 2018, in the upper room of the Salt Lake Temple. Prior to his service as head of the Church, President Nelson served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from July 15, 2015, until his call as the Church’s leader. He has served as a member of that quorum since April 7, 1984.

Let us start with English only and go from there.

The problems of today are many and require a sound foundation in Constitutional principles and understanding. It is extremely important that we do not rush to judgment and make changes in any areas without a proper problem definition. The foundation begins with sound authority to proceed by Constitutional Law, the provisions of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence as concerns are addressed. It is axiomatic that doing nothing is better than doing the wrong thing.

"There's lies, and damned lies." Will Rogers. When one looks at the "gift" of liberty given by God to us in these generations, and the "free agency" such preparations were not to enthrone despotism and tyranny, we wonder.

Joseph Smith warned us that "the United States will spend its strength and means warring in foreign lands until other nations will say 'let us divide up the lands of the United States'" (documented on page 10 of Duane Crowther's book "Prophecy: Key to the Future")
